OluKai Lowcountry Boil Paddle Battle

Ray and I took a break from our epic road travels, to fly from Minnesota to Hilton Head for a few days to volunteer at the OluKai Lowcountry Boil Paddle Battle. This event benefits The Outside Foundation. The mission of The Outside Foundation is to get kids outside and protect and preserve the local eco-system.

As part of the event, there is a 5K Vairo Aloha Cup dedicated to my late father. My dad, Peter Vairo was an avid kayaker, and volunteer for the Outside Foundation. He loved their mission of getting kids outside and preserving the local eco-system. We are honored that they named the race in his name. He also certainly lived in the aloha spirit. Aloha is an essence of being: love, peace, compassion, and a mutual understanding of respect. Aloha means living in harmony with the people and land around you with mercy, sympathy, grace, and kindness. (Click to see photos full size)

This year we supported by watching the racers, cheering them on, and taking photos of the event. We had a blast, and felt my dad’s presence as we were there. It was a beautiful day.
