Anchorage, Nome, and Utqiagvik, Alaska

In June Ray and I met up with our buddy, Jamin and his friend Sergius who live in Alaska. We visited Anchorage for a few days before heading off to Nome! We had a wonderful few days in Anchorage doing some local photography, especially with a pair of Pacific Loons, and the infamous Red Throated Loon. Next up was Nome, which was absolutely incredible. Here we decided to switch up our circadian rhythm in order to take best advantage of the best light for photography. We would go to sleep around 7 or 8 in the morning and sleep until around 3-4 in the afternoon and then head out around 5 in the evening for the night of photography. At that time of the year the sunset was around 2am and sunrise around 4am so they were so many hours before and after of just beautiful blue and golden sunlight. It was quite an experience. I think we all were a little loopy from switching our schedules after a few days but it was loads of fun as well. The photography was also so interesting because we were photographing tiny shorebirds in the tundra that I was so accustomed to photographing at the beach. It was really unique for me to be able to see these birds in their nesting habitat, which is absolutely beautiful!!! I had no idea the tundra was so colorful with so many different flowers and little berries. The smell of the tundra was delightful just the most fresh air you could imagine, and the scenery so serene. We happened to be there for my late father’s birthday so we decided to have a slice of cake in the tundra and sing him happy birthday to celebrate. He always loved a good adventure and would’ve absolutely loved this trip. (Click to see photos full size)
